In 2002 the Vital Villages project encouraged local people to identify the main issues facing Alston Moor so that a programme of action could be drawn up to revitalise the area. The Alston Moor Community Chest is a small grants scheme that awards grants of £500-£5000 to local groups and organisations to develop community based projects that meet the objectives of the Alston Moor Vital Villages action plan such as Economic, Community and Environmental development projects.
